Webster Technique: Chiropractic during Pregnancy

If you’re pregnant and your baby is breech, you may have been told by your OB or another mom to find a chiropractor that does the Webster Technique. You’re probably wondering what this is and why on earth you are being referred to a chiropractor.

The Webster Technique is a chiropractic analysis and adjustment that focuses on the function of the sacrum, the triangle shaped bone at the bottom of your spine. Due to the many changes your body goes through during pregnancy, your sacrum and pelvis are more likely to become misaligned. When your sacrum is misaligned and not moving normally, this causes an imbalance in the muscles and ligaments of your pelvis, as well as the nerves that supply this area. These imbalances can cause dystocia, or difficult labor, by interfering with the nerves that supply the uterus, misaligning the pelvis, and causing tension in certain pelvic ligaments and muscles. With tension and imbalance in the pelvis, a baby will have a harder time getting in the best position for birth.

Getting your spine checked by a chiropractor during pregnancy is great for both mom and baby!

Benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy:
  • Pelvic Balance
  • Less Low Back Pain
  • Decreased Pelvic Pain
  • Better Fetal Positioning
  • Less Waddling Gait
  • Decreased Rib Pain
  • Improved Uterine Function
  • Sciatica Relief

Should your baby see a chiropractor?

Chiropractic care can be very helpful for babies, toddlers, and children of all ages.

A baby’s spine can become misaligned at birth. Even the most natural birth can be traumatic to a baby’s spine. As babies begin to grow and develop, spinal misalignments (or subluxations) can occur from being held or placed in the same position repeatedly, from being dropped or falling off of a bed or changing table, or from falling when learning to crawl and walk. When a segment of the spine is misaligned, the nerves coming from that area aren’t able to function the way they normally would.

Since our nervous system helps to control all aspects of our body’s function, your baby may present with a variety of symptoms because of a spinal misalignment. These symptoms can range from ear infections, colic, constipation, sinus infections, reflux, fussiness, lowered immune system, difficulty crawling, and many other conditions.

As a chiropractor, my goal is not to treat a specific illness, but rather to correct spinal misalignments and allow the nervous system to function at its best.

Chiropractic care for babies is very gentle and can be very helpful to help keep your baby happier and healthier!

Chiropractic Care for Children

Did you know that chiropractic care isn’t just for adults, it’s great for kids too! You may be thinking, why would my child need to see a chiropractor? He doesn’t have back pain or neck pain, and I don’t know about all that popping and cracking on someone so small.

First, let’s start with why it may benefit your child to see a chiropractor. The goal of chiropractic care is to correct misalignments in your spine (also called subluxations). When sections of your spine aren’t properly lined up and moving correctly, this can cause the nerves in that area to not function the way they normally should. When there is interference with these spinal nerves and vertebrae are misaligned, children may experience various symptoms. A few common childhood symptoms/conditions that may be related to spinal misalignments include: ear infections, frequent stomach ache, constipation, ADD/ADHD, bed wetting, asthma, and repeatedly getting sick.

How would my child’s spine get out of alignment? Often times, children experience their first subluxation immediately after they are born. Even the most natural birth can be traumatic to a baby’s spine. As babies learn to crawl, pull-up, and walk they are constantly falling on their bottom or even their heads; and it’s very likely that they will be dropped or fall off of something before their first birthday. As they get older, children are always falling or running into things while playing and if they play sports this is happening repeatedly. All these minor bumps and falls can cause your child’s spine to become subluxated and their nervous system to not function at its best, even if they seem fine after it happens.

But what about the adjustment? Isn’t chiropractic forceful? Chiropractic care for children utilizes very specific and gentle techniques. For infants, the adjustment is no more forceful than simply a finger touch. I have taken additional pediatric classes in school, as well as through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, and will care for your children’s health as I would my own child’s.

Chiropractic Care For Your Family

In todays world, many families are looking for that missing link to their current healthcare routine. Chiropractic just might be the link you are looking for. My goal as a chiropractor is to help your body function at it's optimal level by allowing your nervous system to work freely, without any interference. This is important since our nervous system controls every aspect of how our body functions.
Although I love caring for the whole family, my passion is for helping babies, children, and pregnant moms. What's great about chiropractic is that it can be modified for each individual. The care you receive is targeted to exactly what your body needs and I have been specifically trained in caring for the uniqueness of infants, children, and pregnancy.
