Mommy Syndrome

What is Mommy Syndrome? After working with moms who have young children, we've noticed many complaints or symptoms they all have in common. We like to call these common mommy-related issues "Mommy Syndrome". Whether you're a new mom with your first baby, a mom with toddlers or preschoolers, or a seasoned mom with kids of all ages; more than likely you're feeling the same aches and pains as most other moms.

Holding new babies for hours and hours, day and night, causes pain in your neck, upper back, and shoulders. When you nurse or feed your baby, you likely sit in the same place and in the same position everyday. This creates tightness and tension, as well as misalignments in your pelvis, low back, neck, and shoulders. Carrying carseats, diaper bags, babies, toddlers, and whatever else you can fit in your arms also causes strain in your neck and shoulders, and creates imbalance in your pelvis and hips. You know how you always pop that one hip out to carry your little one? That leads to misalignments that need to be corrected.

Another common mommy issue is rib misalignment. This one comes as a surprise to most people, but its very common. A very minor misalignment of our ribs can cause a lot of pain. Sometimes its this annoying pain and tightness in your upper back, sometimes it shows up as a sharp, stabbing pain. Either way, it hurts and makes a world of difference when its corrected. You're probably wondering how on earth your ribs can get misaligned or "out of place". It happens by repetitive movements that involve a lot of overhead or rotational motion. With moms, this happens by twisting while quickly grabbing your toddler up onto your hip; reaching back in the car to give pacifiers, bottles, toys, and snacks; sleeping with your arm in a funny position to keep your baby asleep; and carrying all those things you're always carrying.

Oh, and we can't forget about hormones. When you're pregnant, your body releases this hormone called relaxin. It causes your ligaments to relax so everything, especially your pelvis, can expand to make room for baby. But, here's the thing, it causes ALL your ligaments to relax. So every joint in your body has more wiggle-room than its used to. This often causes pains, like sciatica, during pregnancy; but it also leads to postpartum issues as well. Once baby is here and that relaxin hormone eventually decreases, your joints begin to go back into place more like they were before pregnancy; but they don't always go back into place correctly. It's common for moms to have low back, pelvic, and pubic bone misalignments after having a baby. If these misalignments are left alone they can lead to sciatica, hip pain, pelvic pain, and more.

So, now you know why you've got these aches and pains...but what can you do about them?

First, start by changing up these little habits you have. Instead of always sitting in the same spot at home, in the same position; sit in a different place, in a different position. Just change it up a little bit.  Lift your babies in front of you, instead of grabbing them up from the side; and squat down more, rather than just bending over.
Just make little changes to how you do your everyday life, move a little more, slow down and remember to breath.

Next, is where we can help. Massage and chiropractic are great for moms. Massage can help with tight neck and shoulder muscles, headaches, low back pain, hip tension, and relaxation. Chiropractic adjustments can help to re-align the joints of your spine, shoulders, pelvis, hips, wrists, and feet. You're working to be the absolute best mom you can but its hard to give your best when you're tired, aching, and have a headache. Let us help you recharge by bringing balance to your body. Restoring your muscles and joints to a more balanced state allows your body to function better and allows you to feel better. When you feel your best, you can give your best.
